The Early Years of Hip-Hop in Photography

This is a discussion and presentation by 3 photographers who captured some of the earliest photographs of the hip-hop culture in New York City during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Some of the images in this presentation were taken even before the term “hip-hop” was designated to the culture by Afrika Bambaataa.

Joe Conzo, Janette Beckman,and Martha Cooper present some of their early images and give some interesting commentary in this video. Please go and see the exhibition at The Museum of the City of New York 1220 Fifth Avenue (at 103rd Street)
